Impromptu Speeches

Most meeting roles in Toastmasters are impromptu, such as table topics, evaluations, timer, and grammarian. The exceptions are the prepared speeches.

From experience, we learn to give impromptu speeches too. Here is a Toastmasters guide on preparing a speech in 5 minutes. This is a natural development that comes from working through the Competent Communicator, and advanced Toastmasters manuals.

Presiding Officer

When the President is not present, the Presiding Officer is the first of the VP Education, VP Membership, VP Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer, or Sergeant at Arms, in the order as listed.

This question is answered under “Standards for Other Officers”, found in the table of contents in each Officer’s manual. There is also a listing of ranking Club Officers on the Club Officer Roles page of Toastmasters International.

Guidelines

Speaking spots are given to members who sign up at the meeting, which encourages attendance and participation in the club. Icebreakers and new members have priority for speaking positions;

Any speaking positions or roles not filled, are filled by the Toastmaster for the coming meeting only. The Toastmaster is encouraged to verify and contact each member by phone;
The 6 week schedule is printed from the website, passed around for signups at each meeting, and updated on the website at the conclusion of each meeting;

Speaking Opportunities

The Nina Toastmasters six week schedule is an especially vital part of club activity, helping to ensure that all members have ample speaking opportunities and are able to schedule their speeches when desired. The Nina Toastmasters schedule is prepared by the VPE, who also oversees club contests, and is responsible for the mentoring program.

An excellent method for filling speaking positions has been provided by the Austin Toastmasters Club, a 70+ member club which only allows signing up for speaking positions at the meetings. This encourages attendance at the meetings, and helps to ensure members are prepared and show up for their speeches.

The same method was used as VPE of the Buellton Excelta Club, and the Santa Maria Toastmasters Club. Our current Six Week Schedule is available here.

We meet at Merrill Gardens Activity Theatre, 1350 Suey Road, Santa Maria, CA 93454, every Thursday from Noon to 1:15 pm, except holidays.

We strive to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to hone their speaking skills in a positive and supportive atmosphere at each meeting.

The speaking opportunities include a consistent variety of roles for members to practice communication skills and gain experience.

The mission of a Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
